Product definition

Problem Statement:

The industry of fire piping systems is currently limited to two predominant types of pipes for fire suppression: steel and plastic. While steel pipes offer durability, they are prone to corrosion, chemical vulnerabilities, and are inherently heavy (shown in Figure 1). Plastic pipes, though lightweight, are critically deficient in fire resistance (shown in Figure 2). This situation presents a pressing need for a comprehensive solution.

Solution

The FIRESAFE PIPE™, is a three-sectional GRE (glass reinforced epoxy) type pipe, also known as a composite, with an integrated fireproof layer (shown in Figure 3). It is designed to address the limitations of traditional steel and plastic pipes, which are commonly used in fire suppression systems.

The three sections of the FIRESAFE PIPE™ are:

Structural layer (1): This layer is made from radial +/- fibers (glass, basalt, or carbon) with a modified epoxy matrix. It provides the pipe with its strength and rigidity.

Fireproof layer (2): This layer is made from an intumescent composition based on a modified epoxy matrix. It expands when exposed to heat, creating a barrier that protects the pipe from fire.

Outer layer (3): This layer is typically made from polyurethane paint, but other materials can also be used. It protects the pipe from the environment and provides a finished appearance.

The main advantages of our invention are:

SAFETY

  • Lightweight: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ is significantly lighter than steel pipes. This makes it easier to transport and install, and it also reduces the load on buildings and other structures.
  • Environmentally friendly: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ is made from recyclable materials and has a longer lifespan than traditional steel and plastic pipes. This reduces its environmental impact over the course of its lifetime.
  • Reducing CO2 by 19% more than steel pipes: The production of steel pipes is a major source of CO2 emissions. The FIRESAFE PIPE™ is made from materials that require less energy to produce, which results in a lower carbon footprint.

RELIABILITY

  • Fire resistance: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ has a fire resistance rating of a minimum half-hour, according ASTM F1173. This means that it can withstand high temperatures for an extended period of time, protecting the fire piping system and preventing the spread of fire.
  • Corrosion and chemical resistance: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ is made from materials that are highly resistant to corrosion and chemicals. This makes it ideal for use in harsh environments, such as chemical plants and data centers.
  • Operational temperature: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ can be used in a wide range of temperatures, from -40C to +90C. This makes it suitable for use in a variety of climates and environments.

COST-EFFECTIVENESS

  • 50% greater pipe lifetime: The FIRESAFE PIPE™ has a longer lifespan than traditional steel and plastic pipes. This means that it needs to be replaced less often, which saves money on replacement costs and labor.
